Buying cars off the street when the lane costs too much
I have bought used cars my whole career. Off the street, off the service drive, and off Facebook Marketplace. The good metal left the lane a while ago. It is sitting in driveways now.

Where the cars are
Private sellers list every day on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and Kijiji. Here is what we counted in October 2026:
- Facebook Marketplace: 5,986 cars at the start of one night in a market we are working in Alabama, October 26.
- Craigslist: 255 to 1,020 cars listed by owner within 25 miles of each of 16 Chicago-area dealerships, October 26.
- Kijiji: 9,997 cars and trucks listed by owners in Ontario, October 27.
The cars are there. Buying them comes down to six things.
Six things that decide whether a store buys off the street
- Somebody owns it. A buyer, or a used car manager who will actually call people every morning. A list nobody works buys nothing.
- The dealers posing as private sellers come out first. Dealers and salespeople hustling cars on the side post as private sellers every day. You work the listing, set the appointment, and it turns into a dud. Half the morning, gone.
- You read the car before you drive to it. The seller's own photos tell you about the dash lights, the rust, the glass and the panels. If a photo will not support the call, say so instead of guessing.
- You open like a buyer. Say who is buying and ask for the VIN and the miles. Then run the VIN and set your number the way you always have.
- You are first. The right car at the right number does not sit. The store that works the list before the doors open gets the call back.
- You keep score. Bought, lost, and the price. That is how a buyer gets better every month.
Why I built Auto Oracle
I've run a desk by myself for a week straight. If every car my buyer set in front of me had already been checked, dealers stripped out and junk gone, that week would have looked a lot different.
So we built it. Every night we read the private-seller ads around your store, pull out the dealers posing as private sellers, grade every car off its own photos, and put the ones worth a call on your board before you open. The messaging agent can then message the Marketplace and Kijiji sellers for the VIN and the miles. Your buyer spends the morning on real sellers.
$595 a month per location. The messaging agent is $395 a month more. Month to month, cancel anytime.

Questions dealers ask
Where do we find used inventory when the auction is too expensive?
In driveways. On October 27, 2026 Kijiji alone had 9,997 cars and trucks listed by owners in Ontario, and one Alabama market had 5,986 cars on Facebook Marketplace in a single night. The work is finding the real private sellers among them.
Who should own buying off the street at a store?
One buyer or a used car manager who will actually call people every morning. A list nobody works buys nothing.
